    Martin Schwellnus is a Sport and Exercise Medicine who combines research, teaching and clinical care in his work. Currently, he is a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where he is the Director of the Institute of Sport, Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Research. He is also the Director of a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence in South Africa, and the Director of the IOC Research Centre in South Africa. He is physically active and enjoys trail running, mountain biking, and social golf.

    Team/Sports/Research/Academic Involvement:

    • Professor Schwellnus is an active researcher with over 300 research publications, including book chapters
    • His main research interests include the following:
      • prevention of injuries related to sport and physical activity
      • reducing the risk of medical complications during exercise
      • promotion of a healthy lifestyle (including physical activity) to prevent and manage non-communicable diseases
      • promoting sporting excellence
    • He has successfully supervised many post graduate Masters and PhD students and was responsible for establishing the first post-graduate training program in Sports medicine in South Africa
    • He is a clinical consultant to many elite and recreational athletes
